The main purpose of this project is to help provide teenage girls and young women in Uganda with sanitary towels and underwear.
As you may be aware, young Ugandan girls in rural areas often share their sanitary towels (usually scrap cloth) with their mothers or other female household members. Of course, they are thoroughly cleaned between uses, but venereal diseases can still be spread by sharing.
These girls and young women we are talking about can’t even afford underwear due to the level of poverty and lack in African at large.
Also, the study shows that most of these underprivileged girls miss school for at least four days each month over menstruation. These issues are not talked about in Africa, due to embarrassment, lack of understanding and the low priority of such problems in the face of starvation, violence, death, illiteracy and the many struggles of daily life.
You start to see a real difference in rates of school attendance for boys and girls as they move from primary school to secondary school. Rates for girls can be 8 to 10 percent lower than for boys.
The transition from childhood to Adulthood for girls is usually marked with growth and development and is often met with fear and Anxiety due to the inadequate knowledge about menstrual hygiene and lack of proper sanitary wear; this is in addition to the pre-existing cultural norms and taboos that defame girls during that time of the Month.
Each girl that is sponsored learns of the importance of using their own towel via monthly health education sessions and goes on to teach their children who will teach their children.
